Susan-Williams-Story-of-Colour-in-textiles_BookWith Dr. Susan Kay-Williams*

A fully illustrated talk at 6.30pm by the author of The Story of Colour in Textiles and Royal School of Needlework Chief Executive. Her book traces the story of how cloth was dyed, from pre-history to the dawn of the synthetic era, looking at some of the principal colours: purple, red, blue, yellow, green, black and white. This talk focusses on the PURPLE ranging to BLUE colouration. This event relates to our current main exhibition of textile crafts at Devon GUild: Off the Surface

It is a story, not only of the discovery and use of these colours but also of power, war, politics, the papacy, rulers, science, serendipity and sex.  All Susan's talks are fully illustrated with a wide selection of images.

*Dr Susan Kay-Williams is an experienced speaker having lectured extensively in the UK, where she is a NADFAS accredited lecturer, and also USA, Japan and Taiwan. In 2015 she was made a Fellow of the Society of Dyers and Colourists in recognition of her research into colour history.
