I loom weave in silk, dyeing warp and weft yarns and often using ikat methods. Once my weave is off the loom, it is stretched to restore tension. I enjoy researching and burrowing into a project, initially in a sketchbook, and then the challenge of developing ideas as weave. The actual ‘doing’ of weave is very much part of my working  process; planning, dyeing, winding on the yarn, setting and threading the loom, as well as weaving, are all part of my thinking and creative space. These processes provide my framework for making work, within which I can develop new ideas and stretch the medium further.
Words and text are often part of my weave - for meaning and also for their shape and solidity. I have been weaving and incorporating text as lengths of narrow fabric, building up the letters thread by thread. Writing on Kozo paper made from the bark of a mulberry tree, this is woven into my warp or cut into strips and twisted into yarn. I enjoy the symbiotic relationship between the long-fibred mulberry bark paper and the leaves, which have provided food for the silk worm.
For me, weave is a process combining craft, touch, creative thought and ‘doing’.
