Mikes present printmaking work is in drypoint and embossing becoming bolder and simpler but retaining a humorous vision moving towards wit and irony. The drypoints are cut or scratched onto perspex raising a burr on the surface of the plate which catches the ink when wiped, giving a rich velvety look to the printed line. This irregular line mixes well with the watercolour washes that complete the balance of the print. The embossings are also printed on an etching press but no ink is used. The dampened paper molds to the form of the cut card, engraved vinyl, beads etc that make up the image as it passes through the rollers. A theme which runs through all of his current work is the appropriation of symbolic figures used on public information signs - a truly international picture language.Commission enquiries through the Devon Guild are welcome.
