Dutch artist Peter Ursem studied Comparative Literature at the University of Utrecht and Painting, Drawing and Printmaking at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. Since he moved to England in 1998 he has developed a striking approach to relief printmaking (woodcuts, linocuts and wood engravings) and was granted a Year of the Artist award for ‘Reflections, a book of woodcuts of the Stour’. In his relief prints as well as his paintings, the observed or imagined landscape is filled with a quiet mystery, seeming to lure the viewer into its secret world. Peter likes words and in some of his work explores letters, words and meaning as a visual medium. Peter holds regular exhibitions of his work, and gives masterclasses and workshops in relief printmaking techniques. In 2010 the Dorset County Museum showed ‘Dorset Footprint’, a retrospective of Peter Ursem’s first decade in England. In 2011 Peter Ursem moved from Dorset to the Tamar Valley and joined the Devon Guild of Craftsmen.
