As an organisation we want to create as many opportunities as possible for you to enjoy and learn about contemporary craft. Whether you visit our exhibitions at Riverside Mill or catch one of our shows touring the country, experience learning through our Big Hand, Little Hand project, visit our partner event The Contemporary Craft Fair or see us at Collect in London - we are dedicated to one mission: creating the craftspeople and collectors for the future.
In 1955 the Guild was founded by furniture-maker Edward Baly and a group of enthusiastic makers who wanted to promote the best in regional craftwork. For many years the group worked together on activities including the annual summer crafts exhibition, annual seminar and an autumn social. From an original membership of 18 the Devon Guild has now grown to a membership of over 250 of the finest makers in the South West, many of national and international repute, with 400 supporters as Friends. We have around 30 staff and over 114,000 visitors each year to our comprehensive exhibition and events programme at Riverside Mill.
Riverside Mill in Bovey Tracey was purchased in 1986 and the Guild began employing professional staff to manage the newly registered charity. In 2004 major redevelopment work was completed creating a fully accessible building housing the spacious new Jubilee Gallery, extended shop and The Terrace café with its rooftop seating and stunning views.
