Short Description:
Associate Member. Makes one-off sculptural pieces hand-built in stoneware or porcelain.
Description:
Makes one-off sculptural pieces hand-built in stoneware or porcelain. The clay bodies are often modified with the addition of organic fibres such as paper or various grogs. Colour is added to the clay, in the form of oxides, prior to the making process. Most of the pieces are once fired to high temperatures and are left unglazed allowing the individual qualities of the clay to be enjoyed. The surface qualities are created within the making process. The surface receives no additional treatment, which allows the marks left by maker during making as well as the process itself to be clearly evident. Some of the pieces are cut into geometric forms once fired using a diamond saw. Much of the work is inspired and influenced by natural froms and processes. Some pieces explore the relationship between architecture and nature, between the organic and the man made. Focussing on the internal architecture of living sculptures, they are concerned with the overall patterns of growth and transformation inherent to all natural phenomena. Pieces are produced for both interior and exterior settings, in both domestic and architectural scales. Sculptures are created for exhibitions and commissions as well as those that are site specific.
