Name: Howse, Karen
Category: Embroidery
Short Description: Karen makes textile wallhangings and jewellery with a strong sense of place.
Description: In her textile hangings Karen aims to convey a strong sense of place and atmosphere. Coastline, moor-land, views up the lane or her own back garden are her inspiration. Materials found on site, such as clay pipes for the garden series are used in the construction of the piece. Fine fabrics are bonded and stitched with the sewing machine to create dense tactile surfaces. The sewing machine becomes a drawing tool for Karen. The pieces evolve and change as she is working on them. It is a surprising process, a journey in itself. The jewellery is a work in miniature which often reflects the feel of the larger pieces, incorporating beading, metal and found materials. Karen took a Foundation Course in Art at Loughborough College of Art and Design, before going on to get her BA Hons Degree in Textile Design at Winchester School of Art. She now works from her home in Launceston, Cornwall. Her work was featured in The Art, a BBC2 schools programme in 1996. Her Artworks have been purchased by Paintings in Hospitals and The South West Tourist Board, Exeter. In the year 2000 she received funding from South West Arts for a residency in the David S. Smith cardboard factory Launceston. The resulting Textile Artwork is on display in the factory foyer. Her work is on sale at Riverside Mill and we can show you an illustrated portfolio of her work. If you would like to discuss your own ideas for a commission we shall be pleased to put her in touch with you.
