Description: |
Richard studied Sculpture at St Martins School of Art from 1957-1961 and the studied Furniture at the Royal College of Art from 1965 to 1968. He works in mostly Oak, Ash, Elm and Chestnut. The work is concerned with the physical performance of geometry, structure and construction. The objects are for practical use: chairs, tables, bridges. Firstly, the chosen geometry with its degree of inherent rigidity, Secondly, to show the Nature of the forces in the separate components; compression, tension, bending etc..., Thirdly, to show how the pieces are joined together to transfer the forces: i.e. construction. |
