Meryl Wright and Christina Hamlin met when they were studying for a degree in Applied Arts at Plymouth College of Art and Design. They work solely with Bullseye and Desag Artista Art glass designing and making one off pieces aimed at the gallery market. Using the inherent characteristics of glass, its potential fluidity, fragility, colour, reflectivity and movement, they use layer upon layer of glass to provide the texture, colour and depth, heating and holding at various temperatures to control the movement. They pre-fire colourful layers of glass which they then break up and add to the piece to further create depth and movement. They have overcome the problems of displaying their work by designing metal fixings which they then had manufactured. Mounted on board, this has enhanced the work greatly, allowing light to reflect through the glass. Using a marine palette the work creates a visual reference that captures the constant momentum found on our shoreline. Primarily non - functional their work relies on the need to surround ourselves with art for stimulation, inspiration and contemplation. |
