Short Description:
Enamelling. Gillie works full-time creating portrait miniatures of adults and children to commission.
Description:
Gillie works full-time creating portrait miniatures of adults and children to commission. Her paintings are in vitreous enamel on copper or gold using specialist craft techniques practised in the eighteenth century which she learnt in Barcelona. This involves firing each miniature in a kiln at about 750°C at least a dozen times, gradually modelling the portrait in vitreous enamel paint, using the finest miniaturist’s brushes and fusing the glass metal oxide pigments at each firing. The resultant piece is durable and its colours never fade. Miniatures can be set in standard or hand-crafted frames as jewellery or presented as enamel boxes with inscriptions. Commission enquiries through the Devon Guild are welcome. Gillie has been a member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen since 1979. She is also a member of the Royal Society of Miniaturists, The Hilliard Society of Miniaturists, The British Society of Enamellers and the Guild of Enamellers and is a Fellow of the Professional Institute of Goldsmiths. Gillie submits her work annually to the Goldsmiths’ Craft Council Competition and has won the top award in enamel painting every year since 1995.
In 2007 she won the Premier Craft Award of the competition – The Jacques Cartier Memorial Award.
