Short Description:
Textile jewellery. 'The influences of my work are as diverse as my background. My love of old Chinese stories and legends collides with my day to day experience of the Cornish landscape.'
Description:
Wai-Yuk was born in Hong Kong in 1952. Her family owned a small textile factory where she learned how to use the sewing machine at a young age. After studying Graphic Design she worked as a glove designer then as a dressmaker. In 1978, she came to England to study Fine Art and gained her BA (Hons) from Kingston Polytechnic in 1982. After moving to Cornwall and bringing up her family she concentrated on textile design. “The influences of my work are as diverse as my background. My love of old Chinese stories and legends collides with my day to day experience of the Cornish landscape. My fine art training interacts with my fascination for the practical aspects of sewing and pattern making”. In her finished jewellery pieces she searches for fresh and surprising 3D forms that can be made from little bits of fabric. Forms for smaller pieces such as earrings often grow from playing around with simple shapes. The brooches tend to be much more complex and she often finds inspiration for these from the rugged North Cornwall coast or from her long-time love of studying plants.
