Description: |
Sarah creates millinery and mixed-media textiles from her studio in the Cotswolds. She has a background in costume design for theatre, dance and circus, and an interest in textile-based installation work. Her millinery work combines traditional techniques with innovative shapes and unusual materials such as paper, metal and wood. The one-off hats and headpieces are witty and sculptural, designed to be as striking off the head as on. Her textile jewellery develops many of the shapes and textures found on her hats, particularly flower motifs. Recent mixed-media textile objects explore themes of memory and nostalgia through photographs and handwriting. Sarah completed her B.A. in Liberal Arts at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, then her M.A. and Ph.D. in French Literature at Oxford before training as a milliner. After finishing her training at Kensington and Chelsea College in 2002, she first worked for Stephen Jones Millinery, then set up her own label in 2003. She has exhibited at The Chelsea Craft Fair, Origin and The London Fashion Week Designer Exhibition and was named Hat Designer of the Year in 2005. In 2007, her work featured in Get Fresh exhibition at the Devon Guild. She is a member of the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen, and of the Studio Seven group of textile artists, with whom she has collaborated on Textiles in Performance (2007) and Make Do & Mend (2008). |
