Mary Sumner
Category:
Printmaking
Short Description:
New to lino-cutting, Mary is interested in this low-tech technique which suits her illustrative approach to work.
Description:
Well known and widely exhibited in the South West, Mary has recently returned to painting and printmaking via producing decorative textiles, much of her latest work is based on the Mid-Devon landscape around Tiverton, her home for 20 years. Sketched observations on her daily walks provide much of the inspiration for her pictures; farm landscapes, bird-life and life along the Grand Western Canal as well as the seascapes of the South-West.
"From an early age I have always drawn and painted, and been visually excited by the flora and fauna around me and their relationship to vernacular buildings within the landscape."
Over time Mary's style has evolved to capture glimpsed moments and moods of the ever-changing English counryside, coastal towns rolling hills and animals going about their business to produce detailed and intensely coloured pictures.
