Description: At present, Paul’s interest is with turning large decorated bowls and platters that are both functional and ‘artistic’, and he is also exploring various sculptural themes to incorporate into his work. He generally turns locally sourced wood and he tries not to be restrictive in his approach, realizing that imagination rather than technique is the main limiting factor in the production of one-off pieces. Brought up in the leafy suburbs of Hertfordshire, Paul’s first paid job whilst still at school, was working in the local saw mill on Saturdays. The smell of the wood, the sight of the giant tree trunks, and the surrounding countryside instilled in him a great love of nature and all things woody. This continued right through his education until Paul finally gained an Honors Degree in Environmental Science from Plymouth Polytechnic. Paul really discovered woodturning by a ‘chance’ encounter with a woodturning magazine left in the clinic he was working in back in 1997. He has been passionately turning ever since.
