The Guild runs lectures, professional development sessions and workshops to help inspire and educate about different types of craft making, materials and techniques. There are also events to support craft makers in their business and practice.
Three Devon Guild CPD events for Members:
Digital imaging workshop, Writing an Artist Statement and the Hero’s Journey
i. Digital imaging workshop:
Alan Winn from Focal Point in Exeter will be giving instructions on how to improve digital images of your work. Participants are asked to bring samples of their photographic work – on PC readable disk or as prints. The workshop lasting three hours will look at what to consider when taking photographs, such as backgrounds, lighting (colour of light and different light sources ), types of camera (SLR and compact), making best use of the camera settings used on the camera and the importance of using a tripod. Participants will then be working with images on the computer using software for photo-manipulation (Gnu Image Manipulation Program, Adobe Photoshop, Xnview and Open Office software will be provided for use during the session).
Three computers will be available and there will be a short time available for students to work on their own images and notes will be given to students on key subjects.
There are three sessions available with three places on each session. The available dates are Thu 27th May 10am -1pm, Thu 27th May 2- 5pm and Fri 28th May 10am -1pm

ii. Writing an Artist’s Statement:
CPD opportunity for Guild Members who are interested in writing about their work and, in particular, writing an effective and informative artist’s statement.
Phil de Burlet and Bill Eaton, both recent MA graduates in Creative Writing, will run two evening workshops at the Guild where the principles of making your words relevant and interesting to the reader will be discussed.
Writing about your work is a very personal thing. Some makers like to keep it simple: ‘I love the feel of wet clay running through my hands.’ Some do not. ‘In my work I excavate the familiar territories of memory and recall in order to interrogate the fundamental issues of temporal knowledge in relation to conflict between textualist teaching and adherence to naturalism.’ There is no ‘correct’ way of writing anything but discussion and feedback can make the process fun, interesting, and informative.
The two sessions will run on Wednesday 28 April and Wednesday 26 May, in the café, from 6pm – 8.30pm. There are six places available and participants will come to both sessions. The workshops are free. If you would like more information or would like to book a place, please phone 01626 832223 or e-mail phil.deburlet@crafts.org.uk
iii. What's Your 'Elixir'? – ‘The Hero’s Journey’ or ‘How to plan your next move’:
A workshop for individuals who wish to apply the personal development tool of the Hero’s Journey to their professional careers to formulate and clarify their next creative project or career development.
Julia Harris will be introducing participants to a professional development tool known as the Hero’s Journey which will allow individuals and professionals from the creative and business sector to clarify their creative ideas. Focusing on individual projects the course will offer creative approaches for participants to clarify their goals and help them to inspire others with their creative vision. Originally facilitated as part of the Cultural Leadership Network- Craft, this workshop will introduce participants to the Hero’s Journey which is based on the work by Joseph Campbell. The format of the Hero’s Journey follows a simple narrative structure and incorporates archetypal characters, familiar situations and scenarios. This simple story-telling device enables the participant to create their vision and clarify their strategic approaches by communicating the basic elements of their ‘journey’ to others with more clarity, simplicity, cohesion and objectivity. Practically applying the mechanisms of the Hero’s Journey, participants will be able to work through their own ‘journey’ to clearly formulate their strategic goals and creative vision. After the two-hour session participants will be able to formulate a project and inspire others with their project.
The session will run on Thursday 13th May from 10am – 12pm at the Phoenix Hall in Bovey Tracey. Free for Members, Friends, Associates and £10 for non-Members.
