Launch of the 'Co-mentoring scheme' at the Devon Guild ... for Members with Members!

We are pleased to launch our co-mentoring scheme for all Members (existing, new, Full and Associate Members) of the Devon Guild The co-mentoring scheme aims to be an internal, self-run support system for Members to talk about issues which they would like help with, to get another Member’s opinion or simply to have an open ear to talk about matters relating to their practice. The co-mentoring scheme will be on a one-to-one basis.

The structure of the co-mentoring scheme is open and is up to the pair to decide what form it will take. The ‘mentor’ and ‘mentee’ will agree on the time frame and the content of the meetings. They will decide if it is a one-off meeting or a series of meetings. Further it is up to them to decide how they wish to meet (e.g. this could be physically or digitally such as via skype). Furthermore the mentor and mentee can be from the same or a different craft discipline.

If you would like to receive a list of Devon Guild Members who have put themselves forward to be co-mentors or if you wish to put yourself forward as a co-mentor or if you have any queries regarding the co-mentoring scheme or please do not hesitate to contact If you are interested in being mentored by them, please do not hesitate to contact Julia Harris (Membership and Events) on julia.harris@crafts.org.uk or on 01626-832223

I have a painting/printmaking studio in the historic stable yard at Cockington Court Craft Centre, near Torquay. I am interested in talking to members of DGC, associates members of DGC and artists who may be interested in an artist in residence opportunity or a studio share and/or retail opportunities.
Cockington Court has recently undergone major restoration, with the addition of 15 new studios and teaching facilities. The £2.9 million project is aimed at protecting and nurturing our heritage and culture for the residents of and visitors to Torbay, attracting higher-spending consumers into the area, whilst also creating jobs for creative business people, from art graduates to crafts people and architects to graphic designers.

Luke Shepherd (Sculpture) works as a bronze portrait sculptor. He is not interested in photographic realism or trying to imitate in a different material. Bumpy bits in the clay excite him. For him, surface marks show history and the materials must be an equal partner and offer their own unique qualities to the finished piece. The traditional art of the portrait sculptor is both an art and craft combined and Luke sees himself falling squarely between these two camps.

Stuart Low (Glass) designs and makes contemporary stained glass art, stained glass installations and stained glass windows for the built environment. Stuart works with stained glass on public art, ecclesiastical and secular stained glass projects. Stuart will be starting the New Year with the fabrication of a balustrade and corridor glazing scheme for Salisbury Children's hospital.

Harriet St Ledger’s (Jewellery) inspiration comes mainly from natural forms and Harriet particularly loves seed pods and unusual leaf shapes found in Botanic gardens and deep sea algae studied at the Natural history Museum. Her latest work has been inspired by projects with large scale enamels, where she has been experimenting with various techniques and unusual colourations caused by the reaction of enamel with copper.

Michelle Wilcox (Mosaic) is a self-taught mosaic artist with a background in painting and printmaking. Her fine art background has been invaluable as her work involves a great deal of careful drawing out before the mosaic process begins. She particularly enjoys the meticulous nipping and shaping her materials which are mainly ceramics and glass.

Susan Brown (Photography)
Sue started her interest whilst living in Bristol and as a member of Bristol Photographic Society, during this time she had a successful Licentiateship and then Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society. She moved to Milton Keynes and worked essentially alone for sometime and had a successful Fellowship Application. More recently she made the difficult transition from darkroom to digital which she now loves. Since living in Devon, she has renewed her interest and love for the light and the coastal regions.

Christian O’Reilly (Furniture)  Christian takes great care resolving each design, focusing on proportion, line and how light plays on every surface, to give each piece a distinctive identity. When designing, he draws his inspiration from shapes or lines which catch his attention. It can be anything from the shape of a pebble on the beach to the lines and form of a Citroen DS (a car for which he has somewhat of a weakness). He is also influenced by architecture and the space in which a piece is to sit.

Associate Members
Nick Orsler (Glass) After various apprenticeships in small studios in England, Nick traveled to parts of Europe and on returning to England Nick set up a small studio in London with the support of a Crafts Council award. Stockists of Nicks glass have included Harrods International Glass Department, London, Libertys One Off Department, London, The Designers Guild all branches, Next Interiors all branches. Nick is particularly keen to continue with his love of experimenting with colour and form.

Tracy Satchwill (Mixed-Media/ Paper) Theatrical collages are created by photographing real-life models and travelling around the country photographing various objects, textiles and scenes, which are carefully collaged together with illustration and print, producing contemporary historical images.  The work is displayed either two-dimensional or three-dimensional in boxed frames.

Jackie and Jill Abbeysmallcombe - Built Environment.  Jill and Jackie have been collaborating as one artist for over ten years as Abey Smallcombe. They work with cob, earth plasters and other natural beautiful, sustainable materials. Cob is a mixture of subsoil, straw and water. It is a unique material and has traditionally been used for building. It has fantastic qualities - colour, texture, solidity... and allows them to realise and express their ideas in many ways. They have discovered that this material really suits the way they work, their approach, their personalities and their creative style.

Claire Armitage - Textiles.
Claire specialises in designing and making bespoke silk dresses and scarves, printed with imagery from her illustrations and sketches. She has worked as a freelance costume designer for nearly a decade and is a lecturer in both fashion and textiles at University College Falmouth. Her dresses and scarves are designed and made in Cornwall. The textile prints are inspired by the Cornish landscape.

Hugh Dunford-Wood - Printmaking. Hugh started his interest in printmaking in 1989 as an Artist-in-Residence with the Royal Shakespeare Company. As an already existing Member at the Guild in Wallpaper he has in recent years re-discovered his passion in printmaking which he calls Collino prints. These one-off narrative prints are made up of small separate linocuts.  They are worked around a themed series, not telling a story, but creating a mood more like poems than illustrations. The nature of the medium seems to isolate the individual components of each print giving them an abbreviated economy, both in execution and in interpretation.

Sam Pocock (artists name Sam Photic).  Jewellery Sam’s work is inspired by postmodernist theory and results from observing an increasingly homogenous global environment. The question ‘Where was that made and who exactly made it?’ has become increasingly complex. Jewellery is bound up by practicalities and he seeks the limits of form whilst retaining functionality. It is a great challenge for me to present sculpture and free ideas within the practical constraints of jewellery.

Amanda Richardson - Mixed-Media Amanda is an internationally acclaimed artist. Her work is representational in style but exploratory in medium. Her work has always been individual, rather than following an accepted school or genre. A sense of place is strong in the artist’s work, which often describes details of landscape.  Her work reflects a particular fascination with plants as they grow, both in gardens and their native environment, and with rock shaped by wind and water.
