Schools: Our charity 'Big Hand, Little Hand' helps groups to plan practical and rewarding craft sessions with a professional maker. They explore the design process and the practice of craft making using different media and materials. Where possible we help the project to tie in to key stage curriculum subjects such as Art and Design/Resistant Materials.

Mosaic makingSchool workshops have included: figurative ceramics, ceramic sculpture, textiles (felt-making, silk painting and screen printing), wood sculpture, paper, mosaic (panels and seating), and willow sculpture. We have also run larger crafts projects to make ‘outdoor classrooms’ using cob building. You can see pictures of schools enjoying these craft sessions in Projects and Activities.

Craft residencies can be used for a variety of educational outcomes which include:

  - Specialist help with GCSE and A level studies
  - Pupils and artists making permanent work for installation in school grounds
  - Being creative and having fun during an arts week
  - Learning about use of tools, materials and design

willow weavingAll Big Hand, Little Hand projects are a educational partnership between school, artist/maker and the Devon Guild. Funding is shared between the Devon Guild and the school.

Gallery visits:  We also welcome gallery visits from schools, community and informal learning groups - providing a valuable learning outside the classroom experience and way to engage with the arts in a new context. Our venue is happy to host Arts Awards students.

We can provide Educational Resources for teachers to accompany each exhibition and also offer a Quiz Trail or making activities for younger visitors to the gallery.

We do ask that any group of over 10 members is pre-booked and that the group is accompanied by an appropriate number of adults.
To book a school group visit to the Devon Guild please contact us: 01626 832223

Colleges: The Devon Guild runs an educational programme of talks relating to our contemporary craft exhibitions. Our talks are for the benefit of our Membership, students of craft, art and design, teachers and anyone with an interest in contemporary craft.

We support Plymouth College of Art and Somerset College of Arts and Technology by annually offering an outstanding student a showcase for their work in our shop. (See right column.) Plymouth College run a course in Creative Entrepreneurship which aims to guide creative practitioners such as craftmakers in enterprise and practical skills.

We also aim to enhance courses of study at the University of Plymouth through presentations, visits to our exhibitions and talks focussing on materiality, sustainability, spatial and 3D design. For course links go to:

Get Fresh, a biennial exhibition, devoted to new makers from the South West, is a larger showcase for emerging talent where graduates from the South West’s art colleges are encouraged to apply. 2011 saw our fifth Get Fresh exhibition.
