Christian-ORellly_Furniture-wooden table detailA special showcase of hand crafted, bespoke wood work by Guild Member and Bude-based furniture maker, Christian O'Reilly.

He says of his work: 'I have been designing and making furniture for the last ten years. I initially produced work for primarily private clients but as time has gone by I have also been working for the public sector creating seating for museums. Over the years I have worked in many workshops alongside other makers with different styles and experience and I now have my own workshop in North Cornwall.

All my work is made using sustainably managed UK and European hardwood. I create free standing pieces and fitted work for clients throughout the UK and abroad.

In this exhibition, as well as presenting my work, I have sought to show the wide range of skills and expertise that go into making one

The pictures you see on the wall illustrate just some of the processes which have gone into producing the two Alice chairs exhibited here. They document work carried out by not just by myself but also by master upholsterer, Neil Kitteridge and shibori textile artist, Michelle Griffiths.

Neil Kitteridge is a meticulous craftsmen. He uses traditional upholstery techniques to build up the seat pad, combining several layers of various materials to create something not only beautiful and practical but also extremely hardwearing.

I met Michelle Griffiths at The Contemporary Craft Festival where we exhibited alongside each other.  I found her extraordinary structural shibori work and understanding of natural dyes mesmerising.  All of the fabrics used on the organic Alice chair have been created using natural dyes, including those originating from the wood shavings of the chair itself.  Every flower, vintage button and texture has been hand stitched and applied to create a stunning chair.'

The BRIEF: To create a sculptural fabric cover in response to the natural colouration of the Sweet Chestnut wood as well as to the form of The Alice Chair. To create a piece which appears to be “taken back” by nature. To create a piece which functions fully as a chair as well as challenging the boundaries between the applied and fine arts.
