Member Showcase: Penny Carter - glass jewellery - Sat 28 Apr 2018 -Mon 11 Jun 2018

Showcase room. Open daily, 10am-5.30pm

A special solo display of new craft work by Guild Member Penny Carter in our Showcase exhibtion room in the craft shop.

Penny says:
“I create contemporary glass beads, each one handmade individually in a flame. They then grow into unique pieces of jewellery.

I graduated as a glass blower and gradually began working in a smaller scale to work more intricately with colour, enjoying superposing the light of juicy transparent glass and the deep pithy intensity of opaque colours. By peeling through these layers it’s possible to create edible (or not!) fruit like seeds - chili pepper and pomegranate, kiwi and prickly pear, spikey gooseberry or peppery damson.

For this project at the Devon GuiId I have taken the opportunity of setting myself the task of questioning the scale I work in and the environment my glass is placed in. Can the colour language work in interior design? Or even in the landscape?

The seed was the small intricate Cornichon bead…”
