David King is an experienced sculptor and was commissioned to create new work along with 4 other artists born before 1948, for the exhibition A Good Age (runs until 3 November 2019) at the Devon Guild. His mixed media sculpture which features in the exhibition refers to ideas of built dwellings as metaphors for the mind and ideas of self identity over time.

David will be talking about his life in London and East Devon and extensive career which includes numerous exhibitions and large scale artworks - with a slideshow of accompanying images.
He now works from a barn studio and galleryin Devon – Over many years he has developed a lexicon of imagery and visual ideas that continues to form the basis for new work. Drawing and colour play key roles in both his 2D and 3D practice.

A little more about David:
''The sculpture I build in the studio is mostly for gallery or museum display. However, throughout my career, I have had opportunities to make several very large works for outdoor public spaces. The permanent sculpture Shadowplay, for a development at East India Docks in East London, memorialised the past working life of the site.  Short-lived pieces, lasting for a year or more, were built for sites as diverse as the redeveloped Millwall Inner Docks in London, Socrates Sculpture Park in New York and a large traffic roundabout in St Louis. I also constructed several pieces in full public view: for example, at Victoria Park in Bath and for a rural site in South West Ireland. On one occasion I worked with sizeable off-cuts from the construction of Canary Wharf for Tempietto, part of a summer-long exhibition.

In my East Devon studio, I work principally on sculptures of a more personal nature – essentially creative metaphors. Steeped in the history and theory of sculpture I am aware that each new work also says something about the place of sculpture in a digital age.''
