Here's Louise's description of the theme and techniques used in the work on show:

''Welcome to my watery world....I am a keen free diver and have wanted to make a body of work describing underwater landscapes for some years. The act of diving is an intense experience, the light and colour changing in a moment. I love the anticipation and excitement of seeing something shimmering, unknown, fleeting…

''The idea of drawing both in and under water started forming in my head. I wanted to be able to translate sketches directly into print, so I needed to find a way of printmaking which would enable me to do this. Luckily, I found a course in Spain and in 2017 went to study a process called ‘Mokulito’, a type of lithography using plywood instead of stone as the substrate which allows reproduction of the drawn mark. I made a prototype waterproof sketch pad using recycled materials, graphite sticks and waterproof paper. I successfully tested it in the bath and couldn’t wait to try it out in the sea!

''Last year, I went sketching and diving as often as I could. It took a while to get used to mark making underwater, but I got better at managing the equipment and enjoyed the challenge of working quickly in a constantly changing environment whilst holding my breath. Each outing was planned carefully as conditions can make such a difference; good water visibility is crucial. Having the ability to dive from a fishing boat allowed me to explore more remote areas.

''Back in the studio, the sketches were transferred to plywood, processed, inked and printed on the press. The editions are small, perhaps 5-7 prints from each plate and minor variations when inking up are quite normal. The two sets of monotype prints titled ‘One breath’ describe two dives. These are snapshots of the experience of diving from the surface, down to the seabed.'' (L.S)
