Guest Maker: Melanie Torrance - Textiles - Sat 22 Sep 2018 -Wed 07 Nov 2018

Craft Shop. Open daily, 10am-5.30pm

A special Guest Maker slot in our craft shop this Autumn: we're hosting the work of Melanie Torrance, a natural dyer and textile artist.

Melanie's silk scarves, shawls, necklaces and home wares are dyed using real leaves, natural dyes, and other botanical materials. She works with natural fibres such as silk, wool, linen and cotton, transferring natural dyes directly from plant to fabric.

Melanie says:

''My real passion is to connect with nature through natural dyes and botanical prints to make items that will be treasured, to rethink our throw-away attitude to clothing, and to foster an appreciation of our countryside. Through natural dyeing and botanical printing I’m rediscovering and reconnecting with the nature that is right outside my door. I watch the seasonal changes closely and have a mental calendar of when I’ll be able to collect plants for dyeing.  I love the marks that plants make on fabric, exploring what that means to me and what it means to be able to wear or use something that has been dyed in this way. My interest extends to stripping back processes to avoid chemical preparations or mordants, to see what colours are sustained and sustainable so that my practice uses the beauty of nature but doesn’t impact upon nature in a detrimental way.''
