Rob Braybrooks was born in West Sussex in 1966 and spent college holidays based in Devon in his late teens/early twenties. Rob's career background as a design engineer and subsequently in design education led him to develop his unique and distinctive artworks. Hand-cut on a Hegner saw; these ‘made’ images use the removal of material from thin layers of birch wood as the ‘mark making’ technique. Intricate cuts and the use of negative space help capture moments amid Devon and Cornwall’s landscapes, fauna and flora.

The old field guides that Rob read as a young birdwatcher encouraged silhouette recognition when trying to identify birds. These same silhouettes, lines and forms can be pared down to the essential elements in the resulting monochrome compositions. The images form physical and visual records of the birdlife and landscapes that Rob has photographed, sketched and enjoyed in recent months in West Cornwall, on the same family farm where his mother was born and bred.
