Maker's Details - Phillips, Lea

Lea produces a range of tableware as well as some larger individual pieces with lively decoration.

Category: Ceramics
Lea's work is about form, function and surface decoration. All her work is thrown on the wheel in white stoneware clay and fired to 1300 degrees centigrade in an oxidising atmosphere. She produces a range of tableware and some larger individual pieces. Pattern and colour are long standing interests. After exploring a variety of decorating processes Lea found oxidising stoneware best suits her expressive style. She is fascinated by the infinite variation created by overlapping glazes and enjoys exploring their relationship to each other and to the white space of the base glaze.

Lea has two main decorating styles. Freestyle painting and trailing using bold brush strokes and different thicknesses of glaze and a more controlled style using wax resist to separate areas of colour. The decoration is usually abstract but may suggest fish, sea or sky; mostly it is about movement and energy.
