Expression of interest for an arts commission in Bristol, United Communities21st December 2018

South WestPart time
Paid (£20k-25k pro rata)

Jayne Whittlestone Jaynew@unitedcommunities.org.uk

United Communities are building 161 new homes in Southmead, Bristol on an old primary school site (Dunmail). Works are being carried out by Engie from July 2018, completion 2020. We are looking for an artistic installation to the site that will both improve the appearance to the site and reflect the great work being done with the community.

The site located on the edge of the residential suburb of Southmead, (5km north of Bristol city centre).  It sits on the shoulder of the low ridge that arc across the northern Bristol suburbs from Sea Mills to Filton, with big skies and broad views towards Southmead Hospital. The site is overlooked on two sides by semi-detached houses and short terraces constructed in the 1940s typical of the rest of the Southmead estate. The other two sides are green edges: to the east, the grounds of the Lanercost Centre and to the north Elderberry Walk, and a public open greenspace with specimen trees.

The houses are predominantly two-storey semi-detached pairs or short terraces, of either pale render or red brick with hipped tiled roofs, providing a largely uniform setting punctuated by set piece public buildings and local facilities.

Local shops and services are provided at Arnside Road District Centre, some 350 metres to the south of the development site.

The site is currently used by dog walkers who cross the open field to reach Elderberry Walk, following a strong desire line from the junction across the site. They also follow an existing informal path alongside the Lanercost Centre boundary.

Weston Power substation occupies the corner of the site, which would be uneconomic to relocate. We therefore want to incorporate art work into the fence around this substation. United Communities invites quotations for art installation following community engagement.

Suppliers should read these instructions carefully before completing their submission. Any failure to comply with the requirements for completion and submission of your submission may result in it being rejected.
Contact Jayne for details of the submission. Jaynew@unitedcommunites.org.uk
