Sam says of her current work on display:
''My career as a textile designer and screen-printer has spanned over thirty years and started when I walked through the doors of Camberwell Art College to start a B.A. in Textile Design in 1982. This began a path of discovery into textile dyeing and printing that I've been following ever since.

Sam-Pickard_Textile-print_fabric-Devon GuidIt isn't just about the design and colour, although that's part of it, but also the complex alchemy of printed textiles that continues to inspire me. A study year in India in 1986, gave me a lifelong interest in block-printing. Watching the skilled men and women block printing lengths of fabric, using nothing more than a board resting on their laps and a woodblock, made me realise that if I wanted to start my own workshop it was possible with almost no equipment at all. In 1996 I was awarded a Crafts Council Grant to set up my business and have been printing textiles ever since, with rather a better equipped workshop now than when I started out.

Many years later in 2005, I undertook a master’s degree in Textile Design at Bath Spa University in order to develop digital design and free up my creative skills. It was here that my tutor John Miles encouraged me to go back to the beginning and start drawing again. Since then drawing from nature, whether birds or plants, has been the inspiration and starting point for all my work.''
