Cresta Browning | Ceramics | Devon

Cresta makes fine handmade sterling silver jewellery individually set against ceramic elements which are high fired to 1220 degrees in an electric kiln.

She enjoys exploring surface decoration and pattern by working on different surfaces to impart texture or by using erosion. Cresta takes pleasure in staining the clay to introduce colour which contrasts beautifully against texture and the shiny silver surface.

Working with clay is an essential part of each collection by introducing a pop of colour and experimenting with texture during the silversmithing process. Her intention is to carry the mark making process from one craftsmen’s material into another to create a cohesive and individual collection of affordable jewellery.

Cresta works from her home studio in Exeter, inspiration comes from nature, organic and found objects. Cresta doesn’t always work small she also makes animal sculptures and porcelain pots.

She trained at the University of Plymouth and obtained a three-dimensional design degree 2:1 in 2004.

Cresta’s sculpture animals are made from Spencroft clay for a smooth surface or Crank for texture; she decorates by using underglaze colours and oxide washes with the hint of a shiny glaze for example on boots and buttons. Work is then fired in an electric kiln to 1220 degrees centigrade.
