Kate Lyons-Miller | Ceramics | Devon

Kate’s current ceramics are mostly about Dartmoor. You might find her out on the moor near her home close to Hound Tor, head down, fossicking for minerals, clays and muds; or high up on the tors with the clouds, drawing, writing and thinking about this amazing, pared back landscape.

Aeons of history are hinted at in the cairns, reaves and walls; ceremonial and industrial, agricultural and recreational. Kate’s fascination with all this is evident in the colours, textures and heft of her ceramic work, and in her artists books, which offer glimpses of her research and deep mapping of her surroundings.

Kate also incorporates clays from other regions in her work, referencing visits and holidays, recently especially from the granite lands of West Penwith, Cornwall.

Kate returned to ceramics, her first love, after a career as a scenic artist, working in theatres all around Britain. Three dimensional design could be said to be in her DNA. Having gained a BA Hons. in Ceramics at Plymouth College of Art she went on to achieve an MA in Ceramic Design from BSAD, Bath, graduating in 2020.

She runs classes and workshops from her Dartmoor studio. She was born in Chagford.
