SarahB | Treadled Textiles | Cornwall

SarahB is a versatile textile artist who sews by hand and treadle-stitch machine to make clothes, embroideries and homewares in her studio in Cornwall.

On graduation from Brighton with a printed fashion-textiles degree Sarah gained a place at Texprint-London. Since then she has had a wide experience of working with textiles involving bespoke gown commissions, print designing, teaching, mannequin making and exhibiting.

In the early noughties Sarah began using recycled materials for an assignment that included exhibiting and hosting workshops at The Eden Project. A fashion accessory made for this body of work can be viewed as part of the collection held in the Museum of Design in Plastics. All of this was the beginning of Sarah's conscious-led creativity involving lower carbon and waste production and the sourcing of environmentally friendly raw materials as close to home as possible.

As well as designing with natural fibres, yarn and cloth Sarah has also designed a UK-made flat-pack dressform in recycled cardboard. This project has particular significance for Sarah and the figures that make its story are collectively known as FlatMannies.

Colour, drawing, form, embellishment, construction skills, texture, scale and humour are all key to Sarah's practice.
